About Me

At 26, I had a resume to die for.  The most recent line being a law degree from a sooperdooper school.  A face that I mostly liked.  A penchant for mischief that promised life was never dull.  A healthy dose of non-conformism.  A federal clerkship underway.  And a highly-paid (if perhaps soul-sucking) job lined up at a big corporate law firm.

Yet, I was gripped by this fear.  Not all the time.  But sometimes – in the soft glow of my second vodka soda (lime) on a promising night, and in the late afternoon blood-sugar-dip daydream of an unpromising workday.  The fear that my life is going to be half spent before I even figure out what it is.

I’m going to blink and be fifty, I thought.

So I took a year off.  I went “on the lam” – on the run from “the law” (get it?).  Without self-imposed expectations or grand plans – or even really a plan.  Just a year.  My year.  To think, to explore, to travel, to dabble, to babble.

On September 4, 2012, my year started — with a one-way solo plane ticket to Kathmandu.  And this blog is its chronicle.

So cool! I want to do this too, but alas despite having traveled lots to work (I’m a teacher), I feel the pull of having to settle down and get serious. I am much older than you! Have fun and I hope you’ll post about your journey 🙂

Lucie on the Lam… this is Rex the pocomoonshine treehouse man.. I did exactly what you are doing in 1968 and will do the AT in 2014 to celebrate my 70th year of not knowing either. Even though I will not pretend to do the whole 2100 at one time, or we’ll see. I’ll follow vicariously your sebatical studying reality. I will chip in a word or two. good wheels to you. Selah Rapha
